Azerbaijani economic relationship with Russian regions


AZERBAIJAN – Baku. Economic cooperation and commercial trade between Russia and Azerbaijan has increased during the last five years, due to good relations between Baku and Moscow, cultural ties (Azerbaijan was a Soviet Union republic) added to agreements and cooperation developed in the last years among Baku and 71 out of 83 regions of the Russian Federation.

On November 22nd, Russian Trade Representative in Azerbaijan, Mr. Yuri Shchedrin, confirmed the positive trend between Azerbaijan and Russian regions and the development of economic relations and partnership. During the 2012, Azerbaijani State has established economic relations with 21 regions in Russia, including the North Caucasus ones like Chechnya and Karachay-Cherkessia, Russian Federation important regions threatened by Islamic insurgence.

In 2013, as Mr. Shchedrin confirmed, Baku is going to sign agreements on trade cooperation, economic and humanitarian fields with Kemerovo Region, Krasnodar, Volgograd and Tambov Oblast and the Republic of Bashkortostan.

In the last five years commercial trade between Azerbaijan and Russia has almost doubled; in January-September the trade turnover increased 13.1 % more than in the same period of the last year. Russian exports to Azerbaijani country increased by 17.7 % while imports from Azerbaijan reduced by 7.9 %.
