#UKRAINERUSSIAWAR. Ukrainians test Polish drones. Russians launch AI drone line

Ukrainian teams from German UAV manufacturer Quantum Systems have begun testing the acoustic sensor on their fleet, currently deployed by the Ukrainian army’s drone units. The device, made by Polish company Weles Acoustics, which Quantum Systems acquired last September, can detect the sound of artillery fire at a distance of up to 15 km.

The system has a built-in automatic detection algorithm that uses artificial intelligence to detect what type of artillery is being used and can determine the geographical coordinates of that artillery. The system offers a great advantage on the battlefield, where Ukrainian UAV operators have used their assets for reconnaissance flights to detect Russian artillery.

Even in Russia, Artificial Intelligence is being focused on drones. Putin has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to ensure the use of artificial intelligence in the production and operation of drones.

On the Kremlin website there is a document signed with the note Pr-589 which states that: “The Government of the Russian Federation, together with the State Corporation “Roscosmos”, the autonomous non-profit organization “Platform of the National Technological Initiative” and with the participation of interested organizations, in order to coordinate the use of airspace and near-Earth space, including at the international level, ensures the inclusion in the national projects “Unmanned Aerial Systems”, “Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the State”, the national project for the development of space activities for the period up to 2030 and for the future up to 2036 and additional funding for targeted activities, for the creation, development and operation of constellations of low-orbit satellites for communications and navigation, terrestrial space infrastructure in order to expand the coverage area necessary for communication and control of unmanned aerial systems”.

The new measure, in addition to ensuring uniform legal regulation of the use of these spaces, also provides for the introduction of digital communication, navigation and surveillance technologies to improve safety during flights of unmanned and manned aircraft, including the formation of a list of related requirements for low-orbit satellite constellations ensuring the operation of unmanned and manned aircraft; it provides for the creation and implementation in the Russian Federation, with the participation of the relevant federal executive authorities, of a unified system for the identification of unmanned aircraft used in the interests of the Russian economy, providing for the possibility of determining in real time the ownership of unmanned aircraft using this system.

Moscow is also seeking growth in the market of services provided using remotely sensed data of the Earth all by 2030. Unmanned aviation will be under public management providing for monitoring the achievement of target indicators established in the national project “Unmanned Aviation Systems”. Moscow wants to create a real state industry in the sector: “ensure an increase in the level of localization of production of key units (units and their components) of unmanned aerial systems, as well as approve programs that provide for the creation of full-cycle production lines for organizations producing unmanned aerial systems and their equipment with such production lines;”.

UAVs will fly in their airspace thanks to the “establishment of a new class of airspace of the Russian Federation, providing for the application of a simplified procedure for the use of airspace for flights of unmanned aircraft, defining the parameters of this class and the conditions for the application of the simplified procedure”. And of course they will have their own facilities where they will be produced, for which Moscow has provided a “road map” for the development of the high-tech areas “Advanced space systems and services”, “Electric energy storage systems”, “Technologies of new materials and substances”, “Artificial intelligence”.
