Lebanon is trying to disarm civilians. A statement from the Lebanese army reads: “After a video clip went viral showing a group of armed citizens issuing threats against several Lebanese parties, an army unit supported by a patrol from the Intelligence Directorate raided their homes in the Amayer – Wadi Khaled area, arrested citizens A.B. and R.B. and seized weapons and ammunition.” The Sunni group had said they were ready to go and fight in Syria in favor of al Jawlani/al Sahara.
Another unit at the Hanider checkpoint also in Wadi Khaled arrested a citizen S.H. while he was trying to transport weapons and ammunition from Syrian territory to the Lebanese hinterland using a van. The seized items have been handed over and investigations have been launched with the detainees under the supervision of the competent judiciary.
At the Syrian-Lebanese border on the side of the Sunni cities that do not fight Israel, since the fall of the former Syrian regime, the northern regions have witnessed a large influx of individual small arms sold at prices as low as half their value.
Despite the new regime in Syria announcing the closure of the northern border crossings, every day hundreds of trucks loaded with scrap metal remanufactured and packaged in Lebanon for re-export are illegally crossing. Local sources explain that “part of this “wreck” is large military equipment (artillery, rockets, etc.)”
Concern among ordinary citizens is growing, because on one side there is Israel that shoots to maintain its buffer zone and keep Hezbollah away from the borders, on the other side we have the Sunnis who are arming themselves to the teeth.
Moreover, it would not be the first time that the enemy of my enemy becomes my friend and nothing changes that in Lebanon the criminal networks of arms trafficking decide to make agreements with Hezbollah and bring what Iran can no longer bring.
