Israel calls for investigation into failure on Lebanese front, Israeli general confirms: “We only miraculously escaped disaster on the northern front.”
Israeli general and military expert Yitzhak Brick called for an investigation into the army’s failure on the northern front with Lebanon, stressing that “the army’s top commanders knew that the northern border was not prepared for defense, but they reacted with arrogance and presumption, evading their responsibilities.”
In an article published by the daily Haaretz, Brick “in 2008 and 2019 served as the officer in charge of soldiers’ complaints and, among other things, examined and investigated hundreds of systemic problems in the IDF, such as combat systems, logistics and maintenance systems, the training system, technology systems and military infrastructure.”
Brick said, “I submitted reports to the army on all the investigations, describing the problems I found and the solutions I recommended.” He added, “The army addressed most of the problems and invested a lot of money to do so, but due to a faulty organizational culture, some problems were addressed and then got worse again.”
He emphasized that in 2018, the Army Minister asked him on behalf of Avigdor Lieberman to examine the IDF Northern Command’s preparedness for the war against Hezbollah on the Lebanese border and against the Syrians on the Golan Heights, noting that he visited all IDF company positions along the Lebanese and Syrian borders.
He emphasized that the results were shocking to say the least and that there was a complete lack of preparedness to fight the war, both defensively and offensively. He stressed that he presented the harsh findings to Lieberman, who summoned then-chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot and then-commander of the Northern Command, General Yoel Strick, to clarify the situation.
He added: “Instead of accepting the inspection findings and quickly correcting them, the Chief of Staff and the Northern Command Commander attempted to evade the harsh conclusions, offering numerous justifications during their tenure, the main one being that nothing had been done to improve the situation.”
He referred to Auditor Netanyahu Englman’s visit in July 2023 to examine the army’s readiness to confront Hezbollah, saying: The situation is “worrying” due to the army’s inability to prepare for war in the Northern Command along the border with Lebanon.
He stressed that this inspection preceded the Hamas attack, noting that dozens of reports have been published over the years confirming the army’s poor preparation to defend or attack the northern region.
The general believed that the failure to protect the borders was a common problem between the northern and southern borders, stressing that “Israel only miraculously escaped a disaster on the northern front, just as it did on the southern front.”
He continued, “The failure of October 7 is a shared failure between the North and the South, and the difference in difficult results is due to great luck and a miracle in the North. Therefore, the reason for the failure on this border must be found.”
He stressed that when army officers realized that the northern border was not ready for defense, they preferred to rely on miracles, reacted with arrogance and arrogance, and shirked responsibility. Even after the disaster occurred, they only concentrated on the areas where the disaster had occurred and did not prepare the army to defend the entire border.
