Islamic terrorism threatens Kazakhstan

KAZAKHSTAN – Astana. Kazakh Special Services have foiled 24 terrorist attacks in 2012.

This impressive figure was given by Mr. Iogan Merkel, General Prosecutor of Kazakhstan, during the first annual International Conference of Kazakhstan Union of Lawyers and Union of Criminologist. Mr. Merkel focused the attention on Islamic insurgency in Kazakhstan and the link between crime organizations, Islamic groups and salafites.

During thew first 10 months of 2012, Kazakh Special Forces and Police detected 112 crimes related to terrorism and extremist groups and 68 member of international terrorist organizations were arrested and detained in the Country.

According to the General Prosecutor the most important security and stability problem for the Kazakh country is the religious justification for criminal acts used by criminal organizations, not the presence of Islamic groups int he Country.
